Hi, my name is Jason Carragher. I am 17 yrs old and I go to St Paul’s Special School in Beaumont Woods. I started when I was 6 yrs old and I have had a lot of problems with behaviour and also with my weight. I have always battled with my weight since I was a young child. At one stage I was 16 stone and was not healthy. I ate all the wrong foods and didn’t exercise a lot, but at the time I didn’t understand why my weight was an issue because I didn’t have the same thoughts as a normal child would have. I started to attend St Paul’s residential unit to help with my weight and also my behaviour as my speech and language wasn’t so good either, which meant I would lash-out .
After starting in the residential unit, I met amazing people who helped me with my behaviour and my weight. One lady there at the time was Rose Hayden and she really helped me to eat properly and to do exercises every day. My weight started to go down slowly after time and I felt good and had more energy. But yet the weight would go up again. As I got older I started to go to the Community House in Santry which I love as it teaches me how to become independent and to do things that I want to do.
My mammy was worried as my weight started to go up again and it wasn’t healthy. She went to see the team leader Niamh Salter and spoke to her about how she was so worried about my weight. They came up with the idea that I wrote everything down that I ate and how many exercises I would do each day. It was great. My weight is down to more or less normal and has been the same for over a year now. I now can manage my own weight and do my exercises every day and am so proud to have learned to do this myself-
